CHARACTER INFO.
Character Name: Uchiha, Itachi
Canon: Naruto, end of chapter 590 (after edo tensei "death")
Character Appearance:
Character Age: 21
Pick A Number: 119, 906

Canon Setting: The world of Naruto is a sort of alternate-Earth without any of the defining landmarks. Hints of modernity exist here and there, from televisions to electrical poles to the occasional wireless headset, but their use is extremely limited and the incongruency is never touched on. Likely, it's a product of separate cultures -- the various hidden ninja villages exist within the wider world of civilians, but they are rarely shown interacting outside of ninja passing through the occasional town or taking missions on behalf of nobles. From a few interactions with the various country daimyos, it seems as if ninja villages exist as the equivalent of a self-governing military arm.

It wasn't always that way, though. A millennia ago, a woman named Otsutsuki Kaguya ate the forbidden fruit of the divine senju tree. Her wish was to amass power to end human conflict, and consuming the fruit gave her the ability to use chakra, in turn allowing her to end the wars with her own overwhelming power. As with most things, however, power corrupts, and she lost her faith in humanity, instead choosing to trap the people she had once wanted to save in the dreamworld of the infinite tsukuyomi, stealing their spiritual energy and turning them into creatures called white zetsu. Soon, a conflict erupted between her and her twin sons (who had inherited her power, much to her dismay), and in a rage she merged with the senju to become the ten tailed beast, which attempted to take back the chakra the sons now possessed. In the end, her sons managed to instead absorb her chakra and defeat her. The ten tails was sealed into her son Hagoromo, thus creating the first jinchuuriki.

The sealing had one small flaw, however: a manifestation of Kaguya's will, called Black Zetsu, managed to escape, unknown to the brothers.

Hagoromo became the man known as the Sage of the Six Paths, and he spent his life traveling, sharing chakra with the people and teaching him how to use it through a peaceful religion called ninshuu. Chakra -- the combination of physical and spiritual energy -- was something he meant for people to use to understand each other without the need for words, to ensure peace in the world. He also separated the ten tails within himself, creating nine new tailed beasts, sentient beings composed of chakra. The procedure left him incredibly weak, however, and he was kept alive by the incredible life force the ten tails' body possessed.

Like his mother, he also had two sons, Indra and Asura. Indra was incredibly gifted -- a true prodigy -- but solitary in nature. Asura, on the other hand, was the complete opposite, unremarkable but tireless, and he earned his power through hard work and the assistance of his friends. At the end of his life, Hagoromo used his power to seal the ten tails' body in the heavens, creating what would come to be the moon (the other brother, Hamura, left the world with the clan he founded to guard their mother's resting place in the heavens). When it came time to choose a successor to his teachings, Hagoromo chose Asura, acknowledging his ideals of love and friendship as the true path to peace. Indra was enraged by this slight, however, and was partially manipulated by Black Zetsu into attacking his brother, thus reigniting a new period of endless war between their descendants that spanned for hundreds of years.

Ninshuu became ninjutsu, and instead of using chakra as Hagoromo intended, ninja created techniques that could imbue chakra with various basic elemental or shape-changing properties, or control another person's chakra flow through illusions. Genetic mutations cropped up as the population grew and diversified, leading to specific bloodline abilities, such as the Hozuki clan's ability to liquify one's own body, or the Yuki clan's ability to combine the elements of wind and water to create the ice element. The Sharingan of the Uchiha clan is one particularly precious mutation (a descendant power of Kaguya's Rinne Sharingan first manifested in Indra), capable of, among other things, subjugating and controlling the tailed beasts.  It is considered one of the three great eye techniques, along with the Byakugan (also possessed by Kaguya) and the Rinnegan (first manifested in Hagoromo).

These ninja clans warred between themselves for power and territory in what was called the warring states period, the most feared of them being two clans in particular -- Indra's descendants, the Uchiha, and Asura's descendants, the Senju.   Eventually many people got tired of the continual bloodshed, and so Hashirama of the Senju clan sought a treaty with Madara of the Uchiha, his childhood friend. Thus, the two of them formed what would become the first great country: the Land of Fire. Four other countries -- Earth, Lightning, Water and Wind -- were created in turn, the land mapped out to create a balance of power within the shinobi world. (Other countries certainly exist outside the five great countries, but for the purposes of the main series itself, they don't amount to much. Outside of filler episodes, the only one that really gets any attention is the Land of Iron, home of samurai, which allied with the shinobi alliance during the fourth great shinobi war.) Each also possess a powerful central village where ninja are born and trained, again with an eye toward balance of power. Children who wish to become ninja begin in their village academy, advancing to the rank of genin, should they pass their exams. From there, they can become chunin by passing a series of written and combat exams, supervised and critiqued by the leaders of all five countries. Beyond that is the jonin rank, an equivalency to captain which (according to the anime databook) requires nominations from the village and approval by the sitting Kage based on individual merit and skill. Some may even become Anbu, members of the Kage's own hand-picked special tactical and assassination forces, though the decision is based solely on ability instead of rank. To manage the countries themselves, Daimyo were appointed into a monarchy-styled government. The villages were to be led by a Kage, who would be chosen by the country's Daimyo and confirmed by the jounin -- high ranked ninjas from within the village itself.  Finally, Hashirama distributed the tailed beasts he'd captured to the different villages.   Unsurprisingly, Hashirama was chosen to be Konoha's first Hokage, to Madara's dismay.

The endless wars of the age before were largely settled, though they did not disappear completely. Certainly those that broke out became more structured. Through it all, Black Zetsu was there, manipulating in particular the emotionally volatile Uchiha clan (and Indra's reincarnations in particular) in an attempt to reawaken the Rinnegan, needed to summon the body of the ten tails and rejuvenate it by absorbing the nine tailed beasts that Hagoromo had separated -- which would eventually lead to the resurrection of Kaguya. It found that Uchiha in Madara, who managed to do it by possessing a highly evolved version of the Sharingan and infusing Hashirama's DNA into himself after launching a one-man rebellion against his former friend that all believed had led to Madara's death.

It was into the relative lull of this new age, during the reign of the fourth Hokage, that Itachi was born.  Unfortunately, trouble was beginning to stir again, and it wasn't long before Konoha was plunged into war once more.  Shortly after the conclusion of the war, an attack on the village by the nine tailed fox (that saw among its casualties the fourth Hokage, prompting the third to come out of retirement and resume the title) would eventually lead to the Uchiha clan being further ostracized by Konoha's leadership, a quiet continuation of a program set into motion by the second Hokage in the wake of Madara's rebellion so many years ago.  This move would prove to be a costly and tragic one, eventually inciting the once-loyal clan to plan for the uprising that the elders so feared.

Character History: long-winded, hella-involved tl;dr: here.

Character Personality:

"People live their lives bound by what they accept as correct and true. That's how they define "reality". But what does it mean to be "correct" or "true"? Merely vague concepts… their "reality" may all be a mirage. Can we consider them to simply be living in their own world, shaped by their beliefs?”

There are things that the ninja world knows about Itachi: that even as a child, he was an absurdly gifted ninja, as could only be expected from the firstborn of one of Konoha's most powerful clans; that he was a quiet person, perhaps remarkable only for his talent; that at the age of thirteen, he massacred his entire clan save for his younger brother and fled Konoha to take up the hopeless, hunted life of a missing nin; that he joined a criminal organization, appearing once more in Konoha years after his exile to hunt the nine tails' jinchuuriki, Naruto.

All of these things are true. Yet, as might be expected from the scion of a clan that specialized in illusion, they are mere ripples on the surface of a deep pond -- minor things that, if only for a time, conceal everything.

"Self-sacrifice… A nameless shinobi who protects peace within its shadow… That is a true shinobi."

Itachi is the quintessential ninja, an even mix of deception, contradiction and duty who discarded both pride and honor in pursuit of his goals; neither his brother, his mentor, nor his partner were ever able to fully penetrate the many layers of purpose and deflection he’d wrapped himself in to get to the core of his ambitions -- no matter how certain they might have been.

His personality was vastly shaped by his childhood: at the tender age of four, he bore witness to the horrifying carnage of the third shinobi world war -- reflexively, he rejected it, the trauma pushing him to become a firm pacifist. This did not negatively influence his training as a ninja, but instead kindled in him the fierce desire to protect what he loved with all the power at his disposal, propelling him harder and further than anyone could have imagined. He shone, hard work and inherent talent combining to create a ninja regarded by some as the greatest genius of his generation. Graduating at age seven, promoted to chunin at ten, Itachi become the youngest Anbu in Konoha's history at eleven -- an age when most of his peers hadn't even left the academy.  He accepted a captaincy within the Anbu at thirteen.

But while he was admired for his vast talent, some were also apprehensive of his aloofness; his position as heir presumptive of the Uchiha clan was a class barrier, his distance from his peers in terms of ability and proximity a social one. Beyond that, he was a member of the militant Uchiha clan, who lived in its own compound, walled away from the rest of Konoha.

The reasons for that separation are a long story, and yet one vital to the entire shape of Itachi's life: while the overwhelming majority of Konoha knew nothing of the Uchiha's situation, save for their position as the village's police force, the highest leadership of the village had long viewed the clan as seditionists. Their ancestor, Madara Uchiha, had indeed rebelled against the village, and though the clan turned its back on him, they were thereafter marked and eventually segregated in a compound that acted as a cage.

Relegated to a nominal position, voiceless within their village and under constant watch by the Anbu, Itachi's father -- the current clan head -- decided at last to give Konoha the rebellion its leadership had so strongly believed them capable of. The head entrusted Itachi with the task of gaining a foothold within the Hokage's tower from which to gain precious information, as he was currently one of precious few Uchiha the village leadership deigned to fully trust.

Unfortunately for his father, Itachi's family ties were not as nearly as strong as one might reasonably expect of a member of their insular clan. Itachi had not simply contented himself with learning how to be an excellent combatant, but had also taken to obsessively studying the history of both his village and the shinobi world. By coming to understand the past, he gained great insight into what the future would likely hold for them all -- his knowledge and intuition were great enough that the third Hokage considered him to possess the wisdom of a hokage at the age of seven. He loved his clan, but recognized it as a small part of a far more important whole, a powerful but single cell in a much greater organism.

Thus, Itachi knew with absolute certainty that allowing the Uchiha clan to rebel would cause instability in the delicate balance of power, crippling Konoha and inexorably triggering yet another calamitous shinobi world war. He was forced to make a difficult choice: either keep his silence and allow certain devastation, or turn his family in, placing them at the mercy of the already-suspicious council. He chose the village -- and the ninja world -- over blood, and took up the role of a double agent, feeding his father scraps of information even as he reported on the clan's movements and preparations to Konoha. The weight of that mission was horrifying; as time went on, and as leadership clashed over what the fate of the clan would be, Itachi began to crack under the strain of it, to the point of outright warning fellow clansmen that their small-mindedness was foolish and assuredly self-destructive.

"You hold onto the organisation and your clan name. These things limit us and limit our capacities… These things deserve to be shunned. It is foolish to fear what we've yet to see and know!"

There was one more crushing blow to be dealt to Itachi: Danzo, a member of the elder council and leader of a sub-group of the Anbu, attacked Itachi's best friend who was attempting to stop the coup himself-- a boy named Shisui, considered among the Uchiha to be their most powerful shinobi thanks to his insanely powerful kotoamatsukami technique which could completely control people without them noticing a thing. Danzo stole one of Shisui's eyes, which housed that ability, and Shisui came to Itachi in the aftermath. Shisui, another trusted Uchiha who strongly desired peace, offered his other eye to Itachi with the wish that he protect the village and the clan's reputation. Then, in order to prevent a conflict over his eyes, he killed himself. Beyond gaining one of Shisui's eyes, Itachi also gained the Mangekyo Sharingan that night, a rare, powerful evolution of the Sharingan that emerges from the extreme emotional trauma of losing a dearly important person. Shisui's sacrifice served as a further galvanizing force in Itachi's life, an example that Itachi admired and chose to emulate.

Though the Hokage had counseled a peaceful resolution through negotiation, the other elders, led by Danzo, demanded nothing less than the complete destruction of the clan. And while the Hokage tried his best, he was largely ineffective; eventually Danzo moved on his own, calling a secret meeting with Itachi to explain to the young shinobi his options: die with the entirety of his clan, or be the instrument of its destruction, in which case Danzo would allow Itachi's little brother to live and grow up to be a Konoha ninja.

It was no choice at all, really. Early in his thirteenth year, Itachi accepted the task of exterminating his own family to save the village and brother he loved. It was a convenient solution to Konoha's leadership, certainly, and despite the enormous personal cost Itachi also understood it was the the solution that would inevitably allow for the least blood to be shed. Further, Itachi was keenly aware of what would happen, should the populace of Konoha learn the truth of what happened. The village trusted its leadership; to learn that they had ordered the destruction of an entire clan would surely cause a massive schism. No matter how justified the reasons might be, or how quiet that division might seem, it would also undermine the village's stability, almost as much as a rebellion itself. Other clans would have no choice but to worry for their own safety. After all, where might one find proof of those accusations? Beyond even that was the fact that the Uchiha were a powerful clan, feared across the ninja world for their powerful bloodline abilities. Thus, it would take a Sharingan user to effectively take down the Uchiha.

And he did just that, enlisting the help of 'Madara' (really Obito), an otherwise unknown but clan-loathing Uchiha he'd caught sneaking into the clan's compound. As with Danzo, Itachi insisted on Sasuke's safety, also securing a promise that his assistance in helping 'Madara' murder the clan would ensure Konoha's safety during his lifetime. In return, Itachi was offered a place in the shadowy organization called Akatsuki, a group of high-ranked criminals co-opted by Obito to collect the tailed beasts. Itachi's belief that the man he met was Madara was certainly reasonable, given the fact that Obito had been shaped by Madara to, among other things, serve as an avatar of sorts. However, it was the one time Itachi was decisively wrong, a fact that would eventually lead to the failure of his most important plans for the future.

Between the two of them, all but Sasuke were killed in a single night of unparalleled carnage. Itachi ensured his brother’s enmity by mentally torturing Sasuke with the vision of Itachi murdering their parents, claiming it was a way to 'test his skill' and thus giving the boy a reason to live and become a ninja powerful enough to defeat him. Afterwards, he went to Danzo to remind him of their deal; if Danzo harmed Sasuke, Itachi threatened the exposure of all Konoha’s secrets to enemy countries. Along with providing a path of safety for Sasuke, orders or not, Itachi accepted the responsibility for his actions, and wished for Sasuke to come to him as the last Uchiha, to pronounce judgement on him for his unforgivable crime against their family. He also reported to the Third one last time, accepting his banishment as well as setting himself up as Konoha's spy within the Akatsuki organization. As a sign of sympathy as well as trust, the Third promised to leave the village's barrier unchanged, so that Itachi could come back without being detected, to see his brother.

"We are humans, not fish. We don't know what kind of people we truly are until the moment before our deaths. As death comes to embrace you, you will realise what you are. That's what death is, don't you think?"

In life, Itachi seemed to have absolute confidence in himself, his ability, and his decisions -- a fact which could be immensely frustrating for anyone dealing with him. This is an attitude that can be considered remote at best, arrogant and singularly egotistical at worst. He rarely (if ever) confided in others after Shisui's death, neither to offer up his motivations nor to ask assistance if at all possible -- the most notable example otherwise is his handling of 'Madara' in preparation for the massacre. He did not revel in notoriety, but accepted it, trading his own pride and dignity for the revulsion of the ninja world, to protect Konoha and the Uchiha's reputation from the ugly truth. He decided to bring the information that damned his clan to Konoha’s elders. He decided to join Akatsuki, intending to watch the criminal group from the inside and gauge its danger to Konoha. He orchestrated the manipulation of Sasuke into a creature of revenge and hate who lived only to take Itachi’s life, knowing that his only other option would have been to kill him.

Nothing could make him deviate from the course he’d set himself upon; until the moment of his death and beyond, he was working tirelessly to achieve his goals, making plans within plans to ensure every chance of his success. (In this you see his other call for assistance; uncharacteristically, he approached Naruto and, once satisfied by his resolve to redeem Sasuke, gave him -- well, forced into him, honestly -- a crow bearing Shisui’s eye, primed to react to a very specific set of circumstances, through which he would use Shisui's power to brainwash his younger brother into protecting Konoha. Though he hoped Naruto would never have to use it, it served to show that Itachi was not at all blind to his brother’s descent into darkness, and had set a safeguard to assure that such defiance would be short-lived. Beyond that, it showed that he knew he'd seriously messed up in dealing with his brother, a fact he acknowledges in his conversation with Naruto after his death and subsequent resurrection as an edo tensei -- a, uh. Zombie … ninja. (No, really.)

It was also just one of many circumstances that showed how accurately Itachi could read a situation far before it occurred. For the crow to be of any use, things had to be just right: Sasuke would have to have killed Itachi , and then trigger the Mangekyo Sharingan. But even further, Sasuke would have to replace his eyes with Itachi's, to activate the next step of the Sharingan's evolution: the Eternal Mangekyo. (To set that stage, when he confronted Sasuke, he told his brother that he had really let Sasuke live so Sasuke would provide the eyes Itachi needed to gain the Eternal Mangekyo, consequently explaining the entire process while solidifying Sasuke's hatred for him, a hatred that would scour away any lingering doubts that killing Itachi had been a right and fully justified course of action. The battle between the brothers -- which Itachi might as well have choreographed -- not only showed Sasuke each of the different powers he might inherit with the Mangekyo, but also provided a potent lesson on the limitations and the inevitable blindness that followed, a fate which could only be subverted by taking Itachi's eyes.) And, finally, Sasuke would have to face Naruto, intent on harming him. There would be plenty of chances for Sasuke to avoid that eventuality, but Itachi prepared for it as if it were a given anyway.

Itachi was not needlessly cruel (by his own standards) by any means; when his Akatsuki partner, Kisame, was toting around the unconscious four tails' jinchuuriki, Itachi showed concern for him, stating that they should take care of the old man and withdrawing rather unhappily when Kisame objected. His actions in battle belied the complex relationship between his pacifist nature and the act he had to maintain; in each battle he fought with Konoha ninja, he was decidedly non-aggressive, defending himself but not causing nearly as much harm as he'd shown to be easily capable of inflicting. It was a workable strategy, though one that required much more effort: out-think the enemy and then overwhelm without causing what he viewed as irreparable harm, and retreat when that option was no longer available.

Itachi lived by a rigid sense of morality, a structure unknown to all but a few people. He seemed to function under a system of priorities, content to allow situations to develop as they may, as long as they did not interfere with things deemed more important to him (or in ways that might hinder his plans in the future). There could be chaos as long as Konoha and its interests were not truly in danger; if it was, he would act as he deemed suitable to rectify the situation -- however, he would not act in a way that negatively impacted Sasuke in any unrecoverable way, as Sasuke was ranked a higher priority. Also driving him was his desire to not betray Shisui's trust, to the point that he was willing to essentially mind-fuck his little brother into compliance if Sasuke couldn't be turned back by less serious means. His solutions and machinations may not have been pretty or pleasant, definitely flavored with a sense of 'the end justify the means', but to someone who had shouldered and been shaped by incredible trauma for his entire life, how he directed things was not something he considered to be particularly harsh.

There are few things Itachi feared, but those fears ran deep and visceral. On a mundane level, Itachi feared the dimming of his eyes, an unavoidable encroaching blindness -- a natural consequence of using the Mangekyo Sharingan. With the complete loss of his vision, his ability to access the techniques of his bloodline would fade. And, to an extent, Itachi feared death. Not as an end to a life he might struggle to cling to, but for what he had yet to do -- Itachi feared dying before he had completed his self-imposed mission. At the heart of that was his wish to redeem Sasuke, but beyond that, he recognized that every day he was breathing and capable was another day purchased for the village he had given everything in his life to protect, whether by holding 'Madara' at bay, keeping Naruto out of Akatsuki's grasp, or being able to respond to threats within the dark shadow of that organization. As long as he lived, he could exert some direct measure of control on those situations -- when he died, he knew, that level of control was gone.

Many of these smaller fears could be tied to a larger one: he feared, however unwittingly, betraying the trust that Shisui showed him. While he may have been able to prevent such a betrayal from his own direct actions, he also took responsibility for the ripples caused by those actions -- as Sasuke was a direct result of his own influence, he felt responsible for what his younger brother did. Thus, if Sasuke endangered the village Shisui died to protect, then Itachi had failed his best friend.

Surprisingly, death seems to have been good for him. When he's shown as an Edo Tensei, he is noticeably less tense. He accepts the fact that Naruto had learned of the truth of the massacre with calm resignation, asking only that Naruto keep the secret to protect his clan's honor. And in a fortuitous chance improvisation, he calls forth the crow that had been meant for Sasuke, using his eyes to trigger the command to protect Konoha, thus canceling out Kabuto's control. He also shows previously hidden away wisdom (and even a bit of humor, weird and dark as it is) to Naruto and Killer B, helping them to defeat the similarly zombified figurehead leader of Akatsuki, Nagato. Itachi is still a stern person, but not nearly as hard as he had been forced to act in his life, and while it's unlikely he will ever break that hierarchy of importance, he seems to be both willing and capable of taking on a less isolated role in situations he might encounter. He's also much more willing to show his emotions; when fighting Kabuto, he expresses a great capacity for empathy, saying that Kabuto reminded him of his old self and admitting that he wanted him to realize his mistakes as well as his true self before he died, as Itachi had not. Rather than killing Kabuto, even when there was no longer any danger in doing so, he left the other nin caught in a genjutsu state called Izanami, an illusion where the victim is trapped in a constant mental loop, able to leave only when they acknowledge their mistakes and choose to move forward with their lives.

"If you want to know who you are, you have to look at your real self and acknowledge what you see. I wasn't able to do it … I lied to everyone, and ended up deceiving myself with my own lies. Those who cannot acknowledge themselves will fail, just like I did."

His greatest weakness had always been his inability to trust in others, and after his resurrection, he is able to turn his highly-vaunted intuition inward and finally recognize that fact. When he speaks to Naruto after their fight with Nagato, he mentions that his failure was due to the fact that he tried to do everything alone, and that if Naruto attempted to do the same he would become isolated and arrogant like Madara. Speaking to Sasuke for the last time, Itachi uses his abilities to show his brother his memories, and acknowledges his new belief that Sasuke could have changed their parents and the clan if only Itachi had sought him out.

After using his abilities to force Kabuto to release the technique that had animated Itachi and the other dead ninja, Itachi says he has no further attachment to the world. He leaves his brother with a few parting words of his own: namely, that he doesn't need Sasuke to forgive him, and that he will always love his brother, no matter what he does.

Character Powers & Skills:

General Info & Skills:
(Number scores are from the 3rd official databook, ranked on a scale of 0-5, 0=lowest, 5=highest.)

Intelligence: (5) As a child, Itachi was considered a prodigy, and blossomed into the well-earned title of genius. Though his fighting skills were certainly aided by the power of his eyes, he is not the sort to rest easy on his laurels; he learns quickly, can think on his feet and form complex plans and tactics in the thick of battle. Further, his studies and observational abilities have led him to develop exceptional intuition, giving him the ability to understand the mindsets and intentions of people and, if necessary, use that knowledge against them in battle.
Strength: (3.5) Definitely not the strongest, physically, though this is a base stat and can be augmented with chakra. He can throw a full-grown human into a wall, but definitely not through one.
Speed: (5) Ridiculously fast, even for a ninja.
Stamina: (2.5) He doesn't have much, though he has learned to make good use of what he has. Using his Mangekyo will often win a battle quickly with a minimum of fuss, but he pays for it in both vision degeneration and a necessary period of recovery. Given that this number takes into account the terminal illness he had in life, it's likely to be a bit higher in a healthy body. Still, he's inclined to conserve energy when he can, relying on less-demanding abilities when he can get away with it and saving the Big Stuff for when it really matters.

Taijutsu: (Expert level, 4.5) Hand-to-hand fighting skills. Even without a weapon to rely on, Itachi's more than capable of taking on opponents bare-handed with martial arts.
Weapons: An expert with thrown weapons, particularly shuriken and kunai -- he's shown even as a child able to perfectly strike multiple targets with a single throw, including the speed and accuracy necessary to deflect in-air kunai to correct its path. He also is shown holding his own against skilled sword users with nothing but a kunai of his own for defense. Itachi has demonstrated high proficiency with swords -- basically the main weapon of the Anbu, it was the weapon he used for the massacre of his clan (which may contribute to his lack of using one during the rest of his natural life). When resurrected as an edo tensei, he also uses Sasuke's sword in the fight with Kabuto, twice getting in close enough to slice off part of one of his horns.

Basic Ninja Skills and etc: Itachi's actions and preparations throughout his life have shown him to be a remarkable strategist, his battles likewise speaking to his skills as a tactician. Life as a rogue ninja has also done much to hone his survival skills, at least in a familiar world. Excellent stealth, whether using chakra or not. He's also shown a remarkable depth of will, pushing himself past the brink in moments of extreme necessity.  Like virtually all ninjas, he's also capable of channeling chakra through individual limbs to grip surfaces, able to climb vertical surfaces or hang off the ceiling, and move easily over water and other liquid surfaces.  Anbu training has given him excellent knowledge of human anatomy, as well as tracking and surveillance skills.

Powers:
Summoning: Itachi summons crows, which he uses as a medium for his clones (to expend less chakra) or provide distraction and confusion to enemies. When Shisui gave Itachi his eye, Itachi implanted it into one of these crows and held on to it for several years that way, before forcing the crow into Naruto. The crow survived him, remaining inside Naruto until a resurrected Itachi retrieved it some time later.
Genjutsu: (Master level, 5) Intellect-based illusion techniques that use hypnotism to cause hallucinations. Utilized by forcing his chakra flow through the nervous system of an opponent to control their senses. His Sharingan amplifies these abilities significantly.
Fuuinjutsu: (assumed limited, not officially ranked) Sealing techniques. Basic stuff; can seal items into scrolls, make exploding tags, help the boss suck the tailed creatures out of their hapless hosts. He was also able to seal his Mangekyo's Amaterasu ability into one of Sasuke's eyes in the final moments before his death. (For more, see Susano-o)
Ninjutsu: (Master level, 5) The mainstay of ninja abilities, ninjutsu are techniques that allow a ninja to do just about anything their chakra and knowledge allows, from quick movement to concealment to controlling the elements and even other people and objects. His elemental affinities are fire (including the advanced blaze nature) and water.

While not a comprehensive list by any means, here is a list of jutsu he's been shown to use, or that are super-basic-you-don't-get-to-call-yourself-a-ninja-if-you-don't-use-them techniques:

Shadow Clone Explosion Rank A offensive ninjutsu. The clone works like any other, save for the fact that Itachi can detonate it at will to form a powerful explosion.
Clone Rank E supplementary ninjutsu. The most basic of clone techniques; you pretty much can't become a ninja without being able to do this. Disperses as soon as it's touched.
Great Fireball Rank C fire-element attack ninjutsu. This uses precise chakra control to blow a stream of fire, which erupts into a large ball of flame. An Uchiha child will not be considered an adult until this jutsu is mastered.
Transformation Rank E supplementary ninjutsu. It allows the ninja to transform themselves into any person or object. Another one of those techniques you have to be able to do to some degree to become a ninja.
Mythical Fire Phoenix Rank C offensive ninjutsu. It allows the ninja to emit a series of small fireballs, or a projectile covered in these same flames. The attack looks like balls of flames approaching the opponent, and even if the flames are put out, the projectiles keep coming. Commonly used to hide shuriken or kunai.
Phoenix Flower Shuriken Rank C offensive ninjutsu. The user releases a volley of shuriken with one hand, and blows fire-infused chakra on them; their destructive potential is heightened, and will continue to burn even when striking a non-flammable source.
Shadow Clone Rank B supplementary ninjutsu. A Jounin-level technique that creates as many copies of the ninja as their chakra will allow, evenly distributing the ninja's chakra to birth clones that can fight and utilize all the original's jutsu up to that percentage threshold (in other words, incapable of using any Mangekyo abilities). When it disperses (a directly landed or powerful attack will dispel it), any new information it learned is passed back to the original.
Water Clone Rank C supplementary ninjutsu. Stronger than the standard bunshin technique, the water clone uses a solid form to attack the enemy. If damaged enough to disperse, it will become water.
Crow Clone Rank C supplementary ninjutsu. A technique particular to Itachi, similar to the Water Clone technique, the body can attack enemies, dispersing into a flock of crows when damaged.
Temporary Body Paralysis Rank D supplementary ninjutsu. An advanced ninjutsu that allows a ninja to temporarily bind an individual or animal. With the enemy frozen in place, the ninja has the opportunity to either attack or retreat.
Substitution Rank E supplementary ninjutsu. A basic technique that will allow the ninja to quickly substitute themselves with another nearby object, be it a block of wood, or another person. The ninja can flee or hide while the original object takes the damage.
Body Flicker Rank D supplementary ninjutsu. The ninja will appear and disappear in an instant. Often, they will use nearby elements like leaves or sand to mask their appearance or disappearance. Good for dramatic entrances/exits, as well as moving quickly across an area. Looks like teleportation, though the range isn't incredible.
Water Fang Rank B offensive ninjutsu. Utilizes water to form a spinning drill, which attacks the opponent.
Water Dragon Bullet Rank B offensive ninjutsu. The user forms a dragon out of water, which deals a heavy hit to an opponent. Its size is proportionate to the user's skill.
Ephemeral Unknown rank supplementary genjutsu. Able to catch the victim by getting them to look at either his eyes or his right hand, he uses hypnosis to control all they see and feel.

Kinjutsu: (Unknown level, not officially ranked) Forbidden techniques. The only one he's explicitly been shown to use is Izanagi, explained below.

Doujutsu: (Master level, not officially ranked) Inherent to ninja possessing special eyes, such as the Sharingan, Rinnegan or Byakugan. Itachi utilizes the Sharingan, which gives one the ability to read genjutsu, taijutsu, and ninjutsu from minute movements of an opponent's body. Sharingan in particular can utilize hypnosis at the same time to make an opponent believe that the Sharingan user is reading their mind. Essentially, when in battle, he can watch the his opponent move to perform a technique, use that enhanced speed to mimic it, and release it at the same time -- as long as it's not inherent to a bloodline, or something his body is incapable of reproducing. Having learned it, from then on he has access to that 'copied' technique. The sharingan is also capable of passing on memories via illusion.

Bloodline Abilities
In the Naruto world, most ninja clans have signature techniques, or groups of techniques -- Uchiha clan's fire affinity, and the Grand Fireball technique in particular -- is one of these. However, these are not necessarily unique to these clans. A step further are bloodline techniques, which can only be utilized by a particular clan (or a person that has taken within themselves what is needed to perform those techniques, most notably Kakashi and Danzo who possess Sharingan eyes taken from actual Uchiha, which allows them to use those eyes as if they were their own). These techniques once were considered a great gift, however, as cultural attitudes changed, they were looked on more as a curse. Several great clans were destroyed by people who feared their 'demonic' abilities.

Sharingan
The Sharingan is the Uchiha clan's blood inheritance limit, it gives the user the ability to read taijutsu, ninjutsu and genjutsu, and defeat it. That said, the user can view a technique and instantly memorize the movements required to accomplish it, including necessary seals and chakra formations. It does not work on other bloodline abilities, and the user has to be physically and mentally capable of performing the techniques they've viewed. (For example, Itachi could watch someone perform a sword combination with his Sharingan activated, and since he has a body trained to handle swords and the physicality to execute such a maneuver, he would be able to utilize it from that point on. However, non-chakra based powers are beyond his range, since he doesn't have the ability to use them.)

The Sharingan isn't granted at birth; rather, it is activated in response to emotional trauma (generally on the battlefield), and generally only with one or two tomoe per eye being revealed at first. A fully developed Sharingan is marked by three tomoe that ring each pupil, and it can track the movement of an opponent -- though the user's own speed and agility will determine if they can respond accordingly. It can also see through genjutsu, and can observe the chakra of another person. The Sharingan also grants the user the ability to perform genjutsu and hypnosis after meeting eyes with the enemy, though some, like Itachi, do not always need to make eye contact. The most common use for this ability is to cause the opponent to move in accordance with the Sharingan user's wishes, to make the opponent think that the Sharingan user is 'reading their mind'. A fully developed Sharingan will be able to predict an opponent's next move from even the slightest muscle tension in the body, allowing the Sharingan user to synchronize their movements and strike an area before the opponent is even there.  Lastly, the sharingan is capable of using hypnosis to control animals or other people.

Demonic Illusion: Heaven and Earth Change
Close-range illusion counter. It uses the copy and counter abilities inherent to the Sharingan to sense and reverse almost any illusion technique back on to the opponent.

Demonic Illusion: Burning Paper Body
Close-range offensive illusion. The victim is trapped in a dark, empty space, with a body made of paper, which burns their opponent from head to toe while they watch. Hinders movement.

Izanami
Close-range supplementary illusion. Created to counteract the abuse of the Izanagi technique which can alter destiny to provide a more favorable conclusion to the user, Izanami is used as a sort of reprimand, forcing the victim to accept their fate at the cost of one of the user's Sharingan. When preparing Izanami, the caster creates a mental 'snapshot' of the physical sensations between themselves and the recipient. Further memorized moments may be catalogued, but the important point is to complete the loop by recreating the exact sensation of one of those points . With that in place, Izanami can be activated. It does not require eye contact.

The effect is to trap the victim inside their mind, within an illusion of that loop of time and sensation, accompanied by an illusion of the caster. Damage caused within the loop is reset every time it In that loop, the victim has full awareness and free will over what they do, and are capable of reacting to and attempting to change the outcome. However, there is only one escape: to recognize the results and consequences of their actions, accept them, and then move on with their lives. In real time, the victim will stay completely still, unable to move or even recognize the outside world, vulnerable to physical and mental manipulation while experiencing the effects of Izanami.

Mangekyo (Kaleidoscope Copying Wheel Eye) and Abilities
A rare, advanced version of the Sharingan. In the same vein as the Sharingan, the Mangekyo is a response to the emotional trauma of witnessing the death of a person dear to them. Itachi gained his after witnessing the suicide of his best friend, Shisui. It not only amplifies the usual Sharingan abilities, but provides access to new techniques, which vary from user to user.

Activating the Mangekyo is terribly harmful to the user, creating great physical strain as well as being a massive chakra sink. Beyond that, use of the Mangekyo degrades the user's vision, inexorably leading to blindness. There is a way to reverse that -- by taking the eyes of another Mangekyo user with close blood ties. If such a transplant is successful, the user gains the "Eternal" Mangekyo Sharingan, which grant them a significant power boost, as well as protecting them from Mangekyo-induced blindness. Sasuke gained his by taking Itachi's eyes some time after the latter's death. (Well, technically, being dead also seems to make him immune to the Mangekyo's degradation. As an edo tensei, he's seen using it multiple times, keeping Susanoo up for long periods of time without seeming to suffer any side effects at all. However, once back in a living body, it's likely he'll just start out 'fresh' and start accumulating the detrimental effects again, barring CDC intervention.)

Amaterasu - Goddess of the Sun (Heavenly Illumination)
Bloodline offensive ninjutsu. Itachi uses the right Mangekyo eye to create a powerful black fire that can burn away anything Itachi focuses on, dispellable only by his command or sealing the flame itself. It also consumes a large amount of chakra, and its use will further degrade Itachi's eyes.

Tsukuyomi - God of the Moon (Moon Reader)
Bloodline supplementary genjutsu. A genjutsu technique that uses the left Mangekyo eye to create a powerful illusion that only a natural-born Uchiha can overcome. Taking place in the mind of the victim, the caster controls all of time and space for a period of time that seems like 72 hours within the illusion. In reality, only one second passes. Beyond the mental devastation, there is extreme physical stress placed on the victim as well, and they're usually in recovery for a week or more. It also places a lot of strain on both the body and eyes of the one casting the illusion, however, and it can only be utilized sparingly.

Susanoo - God of Sea and Storms
Rare bloodline attack/defense/supplementary ninjutsu. Itachi uses both Mangekyo to create a spectral being formed of chakra -- basically said to be the manifestation of one's personal guardian deity, though whether that's literal or not is uncertain. If it is, it's a hungry deity, consuming his life force and, like other Mangekyo abilities, placing incredible strain on his body. Itachi has the ability to move freely within Susanoo's spectral body, and can even leave or draw others within its protective boundaries, if he chooses. It is possible to pull him out of Susanoo forcibly, particularly by using ground-based attacks and techniques. Further, sufficiently powerful attacks can damage Susanoo, especially when in the beginning stages of formation. While providing a powerful protective shield, Susanoo is incapable of defending against non-physical attacks, such as sound or light.

The complete Susanoo takes a little while to completely form. In the beginning, it manifests as an aura around the user, gaining additional power and defensive properties as it fills out, first to a slightly mechanical-looking skeletal figure, then adding additional layers of muscle and skin to create a rather humanoid-looking figure. At its fullest stage, it adds armor and weaponry, looking much like a classic tengu, and can have up to four arms -- two on each side, joined at the elbow. Manifestations of Susanoo can also gain legs for added mobility, though Itachi's never shown using it, or even really needing it.

He can also form Susanoo's parts individually (and more quickly) as needed. A simple skeletal ribcage can be formed to provide a less powerful but still useful shield. Likewise, Itachi can manifest just the arms to interact with his surroundings, such as retrieving people or objects, or to utilize its spectral weapons. The skeletal form can wield a simple curved short blade, but the complete form has two weapons unique to Itachi alone: Totsuka's sword, a legendary weapon that will seal anything it touches into a genjutsu of drunken oblivion until the end of time, and Yata's mirror, which changes its element to match (and cancel out) attacks. The combined use of these two items is noted to make Itachi effectively invincible -- as long as his chakra holds out, one would assume. Either way, their use is incredibly rare, as he simply doesn't have a chakra pool large enough to justify the use of such things outside of extreme circumstances.

Yasaka Magatama
Using the completed form of Susano-o, the magatama is created with Susano-o's right arms, creating a weapon of three tomoe bound with chakra thread. It acts as a shuriken when thrown, with much more weight and destructive potential. Itachi's strongest long-range technique.

Third Person POV:

Realization comes slowly.

At first it's not so different, really; the nothingness of a void, empty of all sensation; a simple existence that flowers into a tenuous awareness of self. A series of emotions. Surprise, apprehension, curiosity, one two three, skipping like a pebble across the surface of a river. All around, that blackness is shifting into something other, blossoming into a scattering of brilliant colors and shapes, countless points of light. And here, in this moment, that awareness coalesces, and it knows itself fully once more.

This place feels timeless, limitless, and in a way Itachi wonders if it isn't exactly that. A part of him yearns for the comfort of that empty nothing again, but this is not the first time his endless rest has been disturbed. His vision tracks across the horizon before him in a rare moment of utter awe.

"Welcome back," he hears, and then there is a figure -- a man, utterly unremarkable in appearance, dressed in clothing like nothing he's ever seen before. Itachi studies the man for a moment, realizing with a start that he seems to possess no chakra at all. A vision, then? It seems no more mysterious than anything else in this moment, and so his focus returns once more to his surroundings, watching as the colors seem to shift and swirl lazily, expanding in his field of vision, pinpricks of light gaining size and intensity until it's almost painful to keep looking. He holds his silence, content to wait.

Time means nothing to the dead.

And soon enough, there are new shapes in this place, orbs of varying color and shape, spinning in slow circles around each other, around the brightest points of light. Itachi knows nothing of astronomy, but he recognizes stars, and the rest begins to fall into place.

Realization comes slowly, but it does come, and he watches the approach of one of those orbs in particular -- or perhaps it is he that is moving closer; still struggling with renewed awareness, a little overwhelmed by where he's found himself this time, it's hard to tell. Green and blue, as unremarkable as the man who shares this place with him -- but beautiful in a way, yes, like a shining jewel laid against a sheet of watercolor. "Do you recognize it?" the man asks, and Itachi's silence this time is a product of deep thought, like a genin analyzing a new jutsu for the first time. "You should. It was your homeworld, after all."

Yes.

Closer now, he can make out the ragged outlines of familiar continents, partially obscured by clouds. There, the golden spread of Suna's vast deserts, giving way to vibrant green -- he can make it out, now, the rough outline of the land of Fire as seen from an impossible distance, a vision unlike anything he's ever seen before. No, even Homura himself could never command such a view from his lofty perch.

"Why?" Itachi asks, and his voice is whisper-soft, strange to his own ears -- or sense of hearing, at least. It is a question that begs many answers. He trusts this man to provide the ones most pertinent, at least to his mysterious agenda.

The man offers up a thoughtful hum, but it feels … empty. Almost patronizing in a way, like a father waving off the inane questions of a clueless child. "That's something of a complicated question, Itachi -- and to be honest, most of it would go right over your head. That's not an insult, by the way, but your people know nothing of the intricacies of intergalactic management. The universe is massive! And crowded, as we can so clearly see, yes? Too crowded these days, I'm afraid, and so my employers are now in the business of ... correcting the issue."

It's something, at least, though not much to go on at all. A strange story to be sure, but nothing that concerns Itachi in the slightest. His attention doesn't waver from that shining, distant world. How incredible, he thinks, that it would now seem so … small. Barely worth the attention when viewed in this way, but now that he understands what he's looking at, it's hard not to succumb to a sense of quiet reverence. The bones of the past, his prayers for the future -- all those things enshrined there, in that one place.

And he also understands that the distance is as symbolic as it is literal. It may be the world he loves, but he is no longer of it; his bones and legacy are all that can remain of him there, at least until some other fool with the right genetic material decides to try their hand at resurrection jutsu.

The first part, at least, is an acceptable truth.

Finally, Itachi pulls his attention away from his home planet, his focus shifting to this mysterious man. "What do you want?"

The man laughs. "What anyone wants! A bottle of good brandy. Next month's recruitment bonus. Three nights with the holy sisters of Pradah Major -- to start, of course. But from you? Nothing half so difficult. A trade, really. A job offer. My employers are hiring, you see, and they have reason to believe that you might be an ideal candidate for the position."

"A little late for that," Itachi responds laconically. Not that he's particularly interested, even so -- this has been a strange and interesting experience, but he's earned his peace, and is in no hurry to give it up.

"There's no such thing as too late, Itachi -- until, of course, there is. Don't you think?" But there's a slight edge in that otherwise-affable tone, a hint of steel that sets alarm bells ringing in his mind. Few are able to step into the realm of the dead, fewer still able to manipulate it. That alone speaks volumes of this man's potential power -- or, at least, his unnamed employer's.

"I no longer have attachments to the world." It's spoken with the verbal equivalent of a shrug. Though it takes some effort, Itachi's attention does not swing back to the world behind him--

"Ah. Then you won't mind if we clean it up, then?"

That question leaves Itachi feeling cold. "Explain."

Something that looks suspiciously like victory brightens the man's expression for a moment, before it settles back into something milder, more professional. "As I said, my employers are in the business of cleaning up prior excesses -- overcrowding, in particular. Of the universe. It's hard work, of course, but quite rewarding." Perhaps taking Itachi's silence for a lack of understanding (which it assuredly is), he continues with a flourish, gesturing around him with outstretched hands. "Too many planets these days, and most of them not worth the weight of their atmospheres. Empty rocks, ugly rocks, rocks crawling with primitives who will never amount to anything -- so we take care of it. A bit of footwork, a bit of expertly applied pressure, and poof! An immediate improvement for everyone."

That cold feeling coalesces into icy horror -- surely such a thing was beyond the powers of any mortal. "Impossible," Itachi murmurs, but the man just shakes his head. "Not at all. Creation is easy enough, after all. Your history certainly states as much, though your people seem rather disinclined to study such things. But no matter! No matter. The important thing is that what is created can be destroyed. My employers have been doing this for a long time, my primitive young friend, and are quite good at it. The best, really -- with, of course, the labors of our most exceptional employees."

Oh. It's starting to make a weird, impossible sort of sense, and that might be the most frightening thing of all. Itachi is certainly among those who have studied history, as he suspects this strange man knows. There's a sliver of anger at the thought of being manipulated, but he holds it back for now. True or not, it seems like a dangerous scenario this man proposes.

"I have no such power," Itachi says at last, relieved by the truth of it. "I cannot imagine that I would be much use to this organization of yours."

"Few do," the man replies with a wink. "But power can be granted. Skills acquired. Lessons taught. As I mentioned earlier -- a trade, yes? I see you, Itachi, and I see you wanting to return to the miserable sleep of the useless. But my employers, they offer you more. Take their offer, and your world will be safe -- ah, well. Safe from us, at least. As long as you act in good faith, of course."

It seems ridiculous. Impossibly, stupidly ridiculous. In some ways, he feels like a child again, staring up into the whirlpool mask of a known enemy -- Itachi may be dead, but he's not too old to have forgotten the desperation of that night, that haunting mission that dogged him through one life and through the next … a mission that still compels him, even now. In return, do not touch the village.

"How can I trust you?"

In response, the man reaches into his jacket and withdraws a stack of papers, immaculately folded. "It's all in the contract, of course. Such skepticism is common, I assure you, but not for long.

"You'd do it, yes?"

If it's true, what this man offers … it's not so different, is it? He could do it; he knows he could.

I will always be Itachi Uchiha of the Leaf.

How prophetic those words seem, now. For Konoha -- for Sasuke and the sake of the world he's inherited -- he supposes his own peace can wait a little longer.

Time means nothing to the dead, after all.

CHARACTER ITEMS.

Pick a Team:
Red: Truthfully, Itachi's strengths lean heavily in this direction. The duties of red team certainly seem to parallel many of the duties of the elite Anbu organization of his homeland; his history within it, despite his age at the time, remains an untarnished testament to excellence. As the saying goes, past results do not guarantee future success, but the fact remains that he has lived his life as a ninja, and brings with him both a wide array of necessary skills and the mental conditioning critical to the success of covert operatives.

When it comes to Itachi's most valuable techniques, his many flavors of clone and crow jutsu are useful for both aerial and overland scouting (as well as distraction, offensive and defensive maneuvers with little to no risk to personnel). His illusions are useful for controlling the senses of those who oppose him (assuming susceptibility to chakra manipulation, of course), able to help his team avoid detection or to paralyze an opponent to ensure a quick and quiet kill. Furthermore, the Sharingan provides excellent surveillance ability -- his enhanced perception allows him to read lips at a distance, or and even mimic the movements (such as typing or writing) of the person under watch by observing muscle tension. Even without access to those techniques, he's certainly not helpless, with access to a full array of mundane stealth, survival and combat skills. Clever and resourceful, Itachi has proven himself to be capable of acting alone or integrating into teams, both as a leader and subordinate; cool-headed and ruthlessly logical, he's not likely to succumb to the mental pressure of the job, or allow his ego to move him in reckless ways. Despite his pacifist ideals, he is bound by both his love for his village and a promise made to his best friend to protect Konoha at (almost) all costs -- with his home as collateral, Itachi will act without hesitation or argument to succeed in any assignment, no matter how distasteful, boring or morally objectionable it may be. Truly, the only bump in the road is his refusal to harm his brother, Sasuke.

Orange: While one could argue that some of Itachi's abilities might be wasted here, he has more than enough skill to be a highly valuable asset in reconnaissance missions. As mentioned above, his jutsu is a great benefit when it comes to scouting, and his Sharingan provides an augmented layer of vision, incredibly useful for sensing and differentiating between the types of chakra (life force) of living creatures from a hopefully comfortable distance -- even through visual deterrents like smoke or fog -- greatly reducing the chances of ambush. His array of offensive and defensive skills, as well as his quick reflexes and strategic acumen make him nigh indispensable for the sorts of surprising and often tricky situations that might crop up in uncharted territory. Though he would surely fit the qualifications for green, his limited chakra reserves and the self-destructive nature of his most potent abilities impose a limit to his effectiveness in protracted engagements, an almost inevitable liability. Placement in orange would allow him to conserve his energy and eye sight by being able to rely on less draining powers, while still remaining effective combat backup should things go haywire.

Reason for Joining the CDC: When Shisui entrusted Itachi with his eye, it came with strings attached: protect Konoha and the honor of their clan. Though Itachi certainly intended to protect their home, Shisui's words provided incredible focus to a boy that might have otherwise (understandably) lost himself in the aftermath of clan's massacre, one that drove him relentlessly toward the realization of Shisui's will -- even in death. Thus, if his association with the CDC will ensure Konoha's safety (even if only from this one overwhelming threat), it's not even a choice at all. He's no stranger to dirtying his hands for the good of his village, after all, and while the scale is certainly much greater, his resolve is unshakable.

Mission Freebie: Nothing at all. There is a cost to all things, after all, and frankly the things he's hands-down most concerned about are already taken care of here -- Sasuke is alive and well and notably not looking to destroy Konoha within the CDC, and if he's been told the truth during recruitment, Konoha is safe from the organization's power at least as long as he obeys orders. Does being brought back to life count as a freebie?

Personal Item or Weapon: So dead. So empty-handed. :<  If he could have something, though, he'd like a kunai for $1000, Alex.  (Either Because Reasons or picked up at the bazaar?)

Character Inventory:
Basic ninja clothing; a heavy hooded cloak; a necklace with three rings along the throat. Nothing like being dead to make inventory management a breeze!
